Poetry Memes and "Autumn-ny" Things
Perhaps you noticed  I almost missed to join  in the delightful spread of poetry promoted by such noble and astounding people as selenakkathyh and quiller77 because I was so overly occupied with switching between different LJ layouts by the minute. I sincerely apologize for any cases of sudden blindness that may have occured during the more horrid combinations and hope that the current solution will be more or less final ....Well apart from one or two minor tweaks to achieve a better readability *g*

To catch up with the rest of  LJ 'verse, I decided posting Dream-Land, one of my favourite pieces by Edgar Allan Poe.Here in the western part of Germany the days are getting shorter again, and while the garden in front of my window is still saturated with autumn colour, plants and branches are becoming ghostlier with each chilly fall of rain. So I'm in a Poe-ish kind of mood *g*

By a route obscure and lonely,
Haunted by ill angels only,
Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT,
On a black throne reigns upright,
I have reached these lands but newly
From an ultimate dim Thule-
From a wild clime that lieth, sublime,
Out of SPACE- out of TIME.

Bottomless vales and boundless floods,
And chasms, and caves, and Titan woods,
With forms that no man can discover
For the tears that drip all over;
Mountains toppling evermore
Into seas without a shore;
Seas that restlessly aspire,
Surging, unto skies of fire;
Lakes that endlessly outspread
Their lone waters- lone and dead,-
Their still waters- still and chilly
With the snows of the lolling lily.

By the lakes that thus outspread
Their lone waters, lone and dead,-
Their sad waters, sad and chilly
With the snows of the lolling lily,-
By the mountains- near the river
Murmuring lowly, murmuring ever,-
By the grey woods,- by the swamp
Where the toad and the newt encamp-
By the dismal tarns and pools
Where dwell the Ghouls,-
By each spot the most unholy-
In each nook most melancholy-
There the traveller meets aghast
Sheeted Memories of the Past-
Shrouded forms that start and sigh
As they pass the wanderer by-
White-robed forms of friends long given,
In agony, to the Earth- and Heaven.

For the heart whose woes are legion
'Tis a peaceful, soothing region-
For the spirit that walks in shadow
'Tis- oh, 'tis an Eldorado!
But the traveller, travelling through it,
May not- dare not openly view it!
Never its mysteries are exposed
To the weak human eye unclosed;
So wills its King, who hath forbid
The uplifting of the fringed lid;
And thus the sad Soul that here passes
Beholds it but through darkened glasses.

By a route obscure and lonely,
Haunted by ill angels only,
Where an Eidolon, named NIGHT,
On a black throne reigns upright,
I have wandered home but newly
From this ultimate dim Thule.

To quote my favourite Peanuts character Linus:

"Afterward, it's fun to come home and have a cup of hot chocolate. And sit in front of a warm TV"  ;-)

Arrgh ...

Ever tryed to post a comment in you newly designed lj? Well, if not you are in for a surprise ;-))

Anyhow thanks for the Poe. Althogh for a reader of modern poetry it comes a littel longwinding, it sets its mood really beautifully, (to my mind at least), and it has some great lines. My favorite are:

>From a wild clime that lieth, sublime,
>Out of SPACE- out of TIME.

His vision really goes bejond the setting he describes :-))

It may also interest you that I gave in and also added my little entry to the poetry meme :-)

F.

PS.: Wehn you have finished working, just give me a short ring ;-)
