Currently watching Simon Schama's Power of Art, the episode on Bernini.

As someone mainly interested in 20th century painting, I never would have thought it possible that lifeless stone could be turned into something like this...

Rape of Proserpina, 1622, Galleria Borghese, Rome

Wow, just wow.

Oh, and thank you so much for the wonderful birthday greetings, folks! Feel hugged! You know who you are :-)
Current Mood: impressedimpressed, grateful

I had a pretty similar post like this last year... so as you can see, I totally agree with you. :D

Thanks for the link! The close-up shot of Pluto's fingers digging into Proserpina's flesh is fantastic! :-)

It's a fabulous series isn't it. Simon Schama just exudes such enthusiasm he can make anything interesting.

Hope you had a good birthday :)

Oh absolutely! :-)

...Both on the fabulousness of Simon Schama as well the birthday. I had a really nice relaxed brunch with my Dad in the morning, and in the evening Cavendish and I first went to see Crazy Heart and afterwards had dinner at our favourite Thai restaurant which is conveniently located right next to the cinema *g*

If only I knew when to watch the tons of DVDs (ER, season 1-7, Twin Peaks season 1) that were given to me as presents...

LOL. I know the feeling. I think it will take us about 10 years to watch all the DVDs we have in teetering piles all over the place.

Glad you had such a lovely birthday :)

*hugs* Happy (late) birthday. You guys coming to London anytime soon?

Originally we had planned to do a 14-day grand tour of the British Isles (including London) during the summer holidays, but this plan has been pretty much annulled by an unexpected yet fantastic success on the job front.

If nothing goes wrong I'll be working for the corporate heritage department of one of Duisburg's major industrial players from May onwards. The job is not as big or impressive as it sounds, just 10 hours per week, more or less project-bound and probably consisting of little more than fighting my way through heaps of century-old company documents - But, hey, paid work *as a historian* on something that's right in my field of expertise... You've no idea how much I am looking forward to this!

The only downside to this : my probation period will fall right into the same time window as Cavendish's summer holidays. So we probably won't make it to London until Autumn :-(

Wow. That sounds excellent (despite the holiday problems - as the daughter of a schoolteacher, I know that's always a frustrating issue;-)). Congrats, and good luck.;-)

And happy belated Birthday (I hope it's not too late;-)).
